Now, if you’ve read this blog as much as I have, you’d know that I use a lot of dot-dot-dots. What I don’t understand is that when you’re inserting a “…,” the dots need to have a space in between ‘em. but why? What difference does is make? Does it signify a whole different meaning when you don’t put in the spaces? I mean, years ago when I did that (I didn’t do it very much but I did it here and there), I didn’t put any spaces. Now, I use the three dots a lot more and I put spaces in between. I don’t know why. Maybe the periods are claustrophobic and they need some space.
Of course, I’m taking the California High School Exit Exam and I’m gonna show ‘em a thing or two in the writing test.
It’s called an ellipsis: http://www.answers.com/ellipsis
“There are two commonly used methods of using ellipses: one uses three dots for any omission, the second makes a distinction between omissions within a sentence (using three dots: …) and omissions between sentences (using a period and a space followed by three nonbreaking-spaced dots: . . .). The plural for ellipsis is ellipses.”
You and I really abuse these things, methinks (they’re handy little constructs, though, I must admit).
